Default Mode Network (DMN)
The Default Mode Network (DMN) is a large-scale brain network that is most active when the mind is at rest — not focused on external tasks — and engaged in internally directed thought such as daydreaming, self-reflection, mind-wandering, and autobiographical memory retrieval. First identified by Marcus Raichle in 2001, the DMN has become a central concept in cognitive neuroscience, psychiatry, and contemplative science.[1]

The DMN was discovered through neuroimaging studies that observed a consistent set of brain regions — including the medial prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate cortex, and angular gyrus — that showed greater activity during rest than during cognitive tasks. This "task-negative" network was initially thought to be a baseline or idle state, but subsequent research revealed its active role in constructing the narrative self.

It constructs a coherent sense of identity by integrating past experiences, present circumstances, and future expectations into a unified autobiographical narrative. This aligns with Buddhist philosophy's concept of the self as a dynamic, constructed process rather than a fixed entity.
DMN and Meditation
Research has shown that experienced meditators exhibit reduced DMN activity and altered functional connectivity within the network.[2] Mindfulness meditation, in particular, is associated with:
- Decreased mind-wandering and rumination.
- Reduced self-referential thought.
- Weakened functional connectivity between DMN regions.
- Increased present-moment awareness.
This provides a neuroscientific basis for the Buddhist claim that the sense of a solid, enduring self is a cognitive construction that can be deconstructed through contemplative practice.
Clinical Significance
Dysfunction of the DMN has been implicated in several psychiatric conditions:
